Mastery rewards have been reduced so that you might not be able to upgrade all hero skills to the max before reaching the mountain, food can no longer be looted from battles, and road combat loot has been lessened. Loot from battles has been changed after the developers looked at the results of a recent community survey regarding loot. For example, you're less likely to encounter watchtowers in the Tangle but guaranteed to run across at least one creature den. Spawn rates have also been altered for each specific region, allowing each one to distinguish itself from another. Watchtowers are no longer guaranteed to spawn in the first region, Oases and Creature Dens have become rarer in general, Academic's Studies spawn rates have been increased to provide better opportunities to hunt shamblers, and cultist encounter location spawns have been increased. In summary, region two remains pretty much the same as before this update, while region one has become shorter and region three has become longer. This change should provide beginning players with an easier time collecting candles in the first region and veteran players with a more difficult challenge in the following regions. The length of the three regions has been altered. Candle unlocks already earned and spent will be saved for future journeys, providing you with a better and better chance to conquer the darkness with each run. Is it better to retire my Darkest Dungeon run at the next inn and take the candles earned on this journey or press forward and risk my gains for a chance at glory and treasure? Candles earned across playthroughs can be spent at the beginning of each journey to unlock a larger pool of items, hero upgrades, memories, and more. Pets can be purchased at the inn from the Provisioner, who will have up to three to select from. Each pet will give different buffs to your party, and there are 10 pets total that can be unlocked. Their slot and cage could be seen in the wainwright section of inns, completely unavailable. Pets have almost been a thing in Darkest Dungeon 2 for a while now.
